Screen recorder software, otherwise screencast programs, are applications that enable you to capture a desktop recording. They are frequently used to set up software or game demonstrations in YouTube videos. If you need to record something in Windows 10, these are some of the best freeware screencast applications for that platform.

Icecream Screen Recorder
The Icecream Screen Recorder is a ‘tasty’ screencast program for Windows 10. This has a freeware and Pro version, but the freemium package has plenty of options for recording videos. You can add it to your software folder from here by pressing the Free Download button and opening the setup wizard.
When you’ve opened the window above, you can select a variety of video capture modes by pressing the Capture video button. The software enables you to capture videos within a custom area, full-screen, around the mouse and has a selfie mode for your webcam. Furthermore, you can also capture screenshots with the program much the same; and it also enables you to convert snapshots to URLs.
Another good thing about Icecream is that it has annotation options for video recordings on its drawing panel shown in the snapshot directly below. With this program you can draw, add arrows, text and numbers to the video recording to further enhance the software presentation.
The only drawback of the freeware version is that it only records video for about 10 minutes. In addition, you can also add watermarks to videos in the Pro version. Nevertheless, Icecream is still a great screencast application even if you don’t upgrade to the Pro alternative.
CamStudio
CamStudio is another screencast program that has had rave reviews. This is a freeware package available at this site. Click the Download button there and run the setup to open its window as below.
Then you can capture full-screen, specific region or window video recordings within your desktop with the software. In addition, you can also switch on an autopan option that enables the recording area to follow the cursor. With that option you can effectively record a smaller screen area whilst using full screen.
CamStudio also enables you to customize the cursor in the recording. You can click Options > Cursor Options to open the window shown in the snapshot below. There you can select numerous custom cursors, highlight or remove the cursors for the recording.
The software has screencast annotation options. CamStudio includes options that enable you to add text to the recordings within balloons, memos and clouds. You can also add time stamps, captions and watermarks to video recordings.
Another bonus is that CamStudio includes its own video player. That plays back the screencast after you save it. As such, you don’t need to open the videos in your default media player.
Ezvid
Ezvid is screencast software for Windows 10 that has a few novelties which elevate above a lot of the other alternatives. Open the software’s website and click the Get Ezvid Now button to save its setup and install. Then you can open the window below and start recording right away.
The first novelty Ezvid has is that it includes a video editor. So you can edit the recordings without any separate video-editing software. You can edit the video speed, delete clips, add alternative audio and add text and images to the recording.
Another novelty is that Ezvid automatically saves your recorded video projects. It doesn’t include any save option for you to select. Videos all save in the same Ezvid folder, which you can quickly open by pressing the Load button.
Ezvid has basic and more advanced options for screen recording. With the more advanced options, you can record videos within a specific capture area, with transparency or with webcam. Furthermore, you can also add extra annotations to the video when recording with the software’s draw tools.
Ezvid also enables you to send videos directly to YouTube. You can press an upload to YouTube button at the bottom right of the program’s window. Some extra YouTube fields are also included on the left of the video preview for you to fill out.
The Best of the RestBest Windows 10 Dvd Software
There are lots of other freeware screencast software you could try out. Open BroadCaster Software, an open source package, is another of the more notable screencast programs that is primarily a streaming tool. This packs a lot of options that enable you to add text and image overlays to video recordings and select multiple scene layouts, and it includes an API system. Open BroadCaster Software has a Classic and Studio version that is compatible with more platforms and has some extra options.
Screencast-O-Matic is an interesting screen recorder primarily because it’s Web-based. This means you can run it from your browser with the latest version of Java, and it also has a desktop version. The freemium version enables you to publish the videos to YouTube and supports AVI, MP4 and FLV video formats. However, its recordings are limited to 15 minutes and it lacks annotation options unless you upgrade to the one-year Pro subscription. Consequently, Ezid, CamStudio and Icecream are better freeware alternatives.
Ezvid, CamStudio and Icecream probably have all the options most will need for recording software videos. So if you need to set up some software video presentations and tutorials, these programs are great alternatives to screencast applications that aren’t freeware. In the good old days, Microsoft had its own media software that you could hook up using a PC in your living room beneath your TV and have a great time. Now, with Windows 10, you can't do that as easily, and while there are ways to access Media Center, it's not going to be supported into the future.
Luckily, there are Windows-friendly alternatives, some very good alternatives at that. If you need a DVR solution that works with your Windows PC, take a look at some of these.
DVRs for Windows PCsPlex
Plex's DVR requires Plex Pass, a subscription that can be paid for monthly, yearly or for a lifetime pass for $120. It works with the most popular tuners on the market, is incredibly easy to set up and at the time of writing, is in the middle of a live TV rollout.
Dell bt mouse driver. One of the strong points for the Plex DVR is that it has an integrated TV guide and rich metadata built in, so all you do is set it up, tell it where you are and it will do the rest.
You can run Plex on a wide range of hardware, too, not just PCs. It's possible to run the Plex Media Server, which is the backbone of everything it does, on a network attached storage (NAS), a Wi-Fi router, or even the NVIDIA Shield TV. There's a lot of flexibility and it has client apps for basically every platform you could imagine, so you're never far away from your favorite recorded shows.
Emby
As an all-rounder for the home media center, Emby is a great alternative to Plex. It does many of the same things, mixing your own media with live TV and DVR. You'll have to be an Emby Premiere subscriber to use the DVR, but it's reasonably priced at $99 for a lifetime license, with options to pay monthly or yearly. The Emby Server is available for Windows, Mac, some NAS boxes and other platforms, too.
Setup is easy, and if you're using a compatible tuner it takes only a few moments. The only drawback here is that Emby asks you to provide a source of TV guide data. Without it, you just have a list of channels with no idea what's actually showing on them.
This could bring an extra cost if you're using something like Schedules Direct, but there are free options out there depending on your location. Once you have Emby, you have a great DVR setup with client apps to use on a number of platforms and one that hooks into the popular service Kodi really well.
HDHomeRun DVR
If you're using an HDHomeRun tuner for your TV and you just want an easy way to record content, SiliconDust's own DVR might be the solution for you. It's currently still a work in progress, but you're able to get early access for a reduced $35 a year right now.
With that, you get a product with almost no setup that is super simple to use. You just download an updated version of the installer program to your PC and point it at a storage location, and that's it. The HDHomeRun client apps you're using automatically detect the DVR, and you're up and running.
What you can't do is integrate as easily with your home media library. But if you just want a slick, simple to use DVR, this is one of the best.
Tablo
Tablo is a little different in that its latest product, the Tablo Dual, is both a tuner and a DVR that you can access through Windows applications. It doesn't connect directly to a TV, it still uses your home network, but its biggest convenience is having a built-in hard drive.
That means using the Tablo apps, you can both watch and schedule recordings of live TV. The built-in storage isn't massive, but you can also attach an external hard drive to give you more space.
Unlike something such as Plex or Emby, Tablo is purely for TV and DVR, it's not a home media center. But if all you want is something fairly straightforward that lets you watch TV and record it across devices on your network, this little box might be the next great thing.
NextPVR
NextPVR is free to use and while it has its own apps for Windows and mobile devices, it's perhaps a better shout for folks hooking into something like Kodi or Emby.
It supports all the major TV tuner types and has an interface designed to be enjoyed on the big screen. You can use it to watch and record live TV, and it has a full TV guide and a web scheduler for setting up recordings.
It feels a little like Kodi, and if you're not keen on the default interface you can switch it out for something new. It's not too difficult to get set up, and it has great support from its developer.
MediaPortal
MediaPortal is a free, open-source media center, often described as an alternative to Kodi. It's designed for Windows and has a server aspect at its core that allows you to set up live TV and DVR capabilities.
It supports a bunch of plugins, but more importantly for TV use, it supports a lot of TV remote controls. The server setup is fairly straightforward, and there's no limit to the number of supported tuners you can hook into it.
As is usually the case with open-source software like this, you can really make it your own. Plugins and skins are readily available to tweak its appearance and function to just your liking.
